چکیده

The smectic-A phase of octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB) doped with a photosensitive azo-compound has been reported to exhibit structural changes and formation of periodic layers distortions upon exposure to low-level radiation. It is caused by changes in the smectic layer spacing triggered by light-induced molecular photoisomerization of the dopant azocompound. Our in-situ highresolution x-ray scattering study reveals that the light irradiation controls the smectic spacing. The exposure to UV light increases the layer spacing by as much as 0.5% ( 0.155A for the studied mixture of 8CB and diheptylazobenzene 7AB at T = 24.00°C). Irradiation by He-Ne lasm at 633 nm causes the contraction of the layers.

Self-Assembly, Condensation, and Order in Aqueous Lyotropic Chromonic Liquid Crystals Crowded With Additives

Dense multicomponent systems with macromolecules and small solutes attract a broad research interest as they mimic the molecularly crowded cellular interiors. The additives can condense and align the macromolecules, but they do not change the degree of covalent polymerization. We chose a lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal with reversibly and non-covalently assembled aggregates as a much softer ...

Deuteron NMR investigation of a photomechanical effect in a smectic-A liquid crystal

Deuteron quadrupole-perturbed NMR is used to study the perturbation of orientational order in a smectic-A liquid crystal (octylcyanobiphenyl or 8CB) caused by photoinduced trans-to-cis isomerization of a photosensitive dopant (diheptylazobenzene or 7AB). The time and temperature dependences of the orientational order were independently studied for 8CB, 7AB, and their mixtures. Upon UV irradiati...

Synchrotron X-ray Microbeam Characterization of Smectic a Liquid Crystals under Electric Field

When an electric field is applied to chiral smectic A (SmA) liquid crystals, a tilt is induced in the director of orthogonal SmA liquid crystals (electroclinic effect). The layer shrinkage due to the tilted smectic arrangement is mitigated by local layer deformation. This paper presents detailed measurements of the local layer spacing under the electroclinic effect of the chiral SmA phase in a ...

Doping the nematic liquid crystal 5CB with milled BaTiO3 nanoparticles.

The simple nematic mesogen 5CB was doped with milled BaTiO3 nanoparticles and was investigated with x-ray scattering. Doping with BaTiO3 nanoparticles of 9 nm in diameter led to the formation of crystallites. These crystallites precipitated and formed a waxlike nanodispersion of 5CB and nanoparticles, which led to intense x-ray scattering signals characteristic of a multilayer structure. Surpri...

Direct observation of diffuse cone behavior in de Vries smectic-A and -C phases of organosiloxane mesogens.

Simultaneous and direct x-ray measurements of the smectic layer spacing, molecular tilt, and orientational order in the de Vries smectic A (SmA) and C (SmC) phases of two organosiloxane mesogens reveal that (i) the SmC (tilt) order parameter exponent β=0.26±0.01 for 2nd order SmA-SmC transition--in excellent agreement with the tricritical behavior, (ii) the siloxane and hydrocarbon parts of the...
